Agreed, Lois debuted way too soon. She should have debuted in Season 6 or later with limited appearances. What were Al and Miles thinking bringing her into teenager Clark's life? And having them live in the same house too.

As for the topic question, even if someone else died Jonathan would have died sooner or later anyway because of the deal that he made with Jor-El.
