Why would they use a character who has no direct association with Kara when they've already established Alura's role as an Adjudicator - which allows them to have her be in possession of info about Reign - and as an AI 'conscience' for Kara - which allows them to have her dispense said knowledge?

They could easily explain the recast if the had to really...above all else, the computer that projects Kara's Mother's image is just that. A computer projecting an image. It may be advanced well beyond human capabilities for technology, but a computer none the less.
Therefore the writers could just come up with some excuse for a malfunction of some kind to happen with the image projectile: it gets damaged say during either a natural disaster Kara saves them from or an attack of some sort. The machine gets slightly damaged, Winn repairs it as best he can, and Erica is the result when Kara tries to summon her mother again. Hell, they could dedicate an entire episode to that if they wanted to.Comment

Because having everything connect back to Kara and her family is unrealistic and makes the verse seem small. This would make the third season in a row where the baddie is connected to Krypton, which is already irritating enough. There are other worlds. There are other people on Krypton. There is no reason to have Alura if the actress who plays her is unavailable. Her character is dead. Rather than re-cast, they could've used this as an opportunity to open up the world and tell a more convincing tale.Comment
