The head of the original brownshits SA (Sturmabteilung - Storm Detachment) Ernst Röhm was gay. As long as he was useful this wasn't a problem. Only when Hitler didn't need the SA anymore he used Röhm's homsexuality against him. Because the SA had become too powerful he and many other leaders of the SA were arrested and killed under false pretenses.
