Wow, you just gave me an idea. What if what happened tonight regarding the revelation that Castiel told Balthazar to stop the sinking of the Titanic because he wanted those 50,000 souls is evidence that he's the one who brought Samuel back from Heaven for some currently unknown purpose? It never made sense to me how Samuel was brought back. We know demons can only bring people back if a deal is made, but nobody would have made a deal to bring Samuel back. And even with demons bringing people back from the dead with a deal, I think it would have to be someone who died not long before, like Sam in All Hell Breaks Loose, and that they can't bring back someone who's been dead for years & whose corpse was rotten & totally decomposed.

Once Samuel was brought back, he definitely made a deal with Crowley. But before that, Crowley wouldn't have been able to bring him back. Ruby said no demon could bring back Dean in Lazarus Rising. But why would Castiel want Samuel back? Did he know that Samuel would work with Crowley and want a connection to Crowley & this Mother?

Or does Castiel want the souls of the creatures in Purgatory for his war against Raphael and he knew that a Samuel-Crowley partnership would lead him to it?
