Clark suffocate?

I just saw an episode from season 4, with that Mr.mxzaza (something like that), and he commanded Clark to suffocate! So he did, and he couldn't breathe! The weird thing is that Superman doesn't need air - so why did he suffocate ?

Any good ideas? Though he wasn't that old, he still went outside the atmosphere to defuse that Missle a year later or something!

Mxyzptlk is magic--maybe Clark doesn't have to breathe oxygen for magic to make him choke? Magic affects Clark as severely as it does anyone else, after all.

Clark does breathe. It's just that by the time he's become Superman, his lung capacity has reached such a point, that he can hold his breath for a much longer time, than a regular human.
