I don't think it's underrated, as much as long awaited, I mean since the first episode aired, people have been expecting him, at least partly to come to his senses, and now he has! Cos he can't do it, what is the point of protecting life, if you life in shadows not living it other than talking to Lois through a phonebooth! If that's the sucrifice he had to make to undergo the training with Jor-El, than who cares about the training, it's not worth it, it simply isn't!

After rewatching the episode I realised that I'd completely missed this one:
